Account for Motion Disabilities

I have seen many pages on our portal with a list of links that appear on one line after another like those shown in the following image.

A list with sequental hyperlines that are single spaced

While single spacing a list is acceptable for a list that simply displays text items and does not have sequential hyperlinks or even a list that has an ‘occasional’ hyperlink, it is not acceptable for a list with sequential hyperlink items. The problem with this practice is that some site visitors may have hand motion disabilities such as those caused by Parkinson’s Disease which makes it difficult to carefully position the mouse over a link and then click on it. Therefore, the current recommendation for lists that also serve as hyperlink lists such as above is to add extra space between the lines as shown in the following figure.

A list of hyperlinks that are double-spaced.

Double spacing such a list is adequate. Avoid using too many blank rows (more than 2) between list items or even paragraphs as some screen readers could interpret multiple blank lines as an indication of the end of the page and stop reading the rest of the text.
